Clubbing

Booking Through Thursday

A combo of two suggestions by: Heidi and by litlove

Have you ever been a member of a book club? How did your group choose (ot, if you haven’t been, what do you think is the best way to choose) the next book and who would lead discussion?

Do you feel more or less likely to appreciate books if you are obliged to read them for book groups rather than choosing them of your own free will? Does knowing they are going to be read as part of a group affect the reading experience?

- I've never participate in a book club. But if I was a member of one, I probably think that the best way to choose a book for the group, is to have members of the group to nominated a book. And then from the nomination books listed, the members should take a votes to which book they think the group should start reading first. I think this way, group will have variety of genres to try. And you might discover a new to me authors along the way.

However I have participate in group discussion for my Yahoo Group list before. I think that book club and Yahoo Group are two different thing. Both do discussed books and does fun events traveling together (or maybe some don't) but with Yahoo Group, we discussed via online instead of in person - face to face. And it hard to get the emotions of a person reaction toward a book while in a discussion session. Unless of course you have met a member before - face to face - and can see their typed "emotions" via online. Anyway, so I'm blabbing (sorry about that!) and should get to the point since this mean nothing, hehe. Even though I am a member of about less then 25 Yahoo Group (some are even just author's newsletters only), I only participate in one of my group. We have listed all the titles of the books from that one author and leave it to members to vote which book they want to discuss next. Which ever titles have the most votes will be put in the calendar schedules to read for that day. And when the time come, we would discuss it for the week. Sometime other members chimed in late, like few weeks later. But that is no trouble for us, since we always love to hear what members think of the book anytime. The group doesn't always talk strictly on books. We chat about anything - everything - off topic things *grin*. even different authors' books. And we discussed their books too. But I do try to participate on book discussed whenever I can :)

I admit, sometime it does get hard for me to participate in the book for the week. Because this would mean I have to do re-read on the old book, even when I want to read something else (like a new book I just brought or books I've been waiting for long time to get my hand on -- and finally did). So re-reading would take away my pleasure time to read other stuff. That is ONLY if the book happen to be my favorite, then I weren't mind re-reading it so much :) And until the author had a new book out, then we discuss that too. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy doing a re-read. Why would I have so many books on my bookshelf keeper, if I didn't? Yep for that reason - re-read *grin*.

Off topic,if the book is brand new to installment and I'm doing a joint reading with other friends, then I weren't mind reading it either, even when it not for book club or Yahoo group. I love to read along with other people.

But I like to be free to choose my own books to read most of the times. Because it give me more pleasure and enjoyment of the book that way. But never matter what books I read, it always affect my reading experience. I hope this answers the question. If not, then I'm not sure if I made it cross hehe. *phew!* this been a long post LOL! Are your butt sleeping yet? I bet it is *grin*.........

Don’t forget to leave a link to your actual response (so people don’t have to go searching for it) in the comments—or if you prefer, leave your answers in the comments themselves!

This is interesting, for I've never joined any book club before. I'm not sure about the re-reading part, because I'd prefer the time to be spent on books I haven't read...but that's because I'm reading on my own. ;)

I do lot of re-reading which might explain why my TBR pile is getting larger LOL...however most of my reading that I do on my own free well, are the new book -- that I never read before.

Re-reading a part. I do it for myself at times. However, as Melody says I would rather move to my next book.

Hi Julia! I'm very selective with re-readings... I've never joined a book club as far as I can remember but that doesn't mean I will not in the future. Hehe...

Oh yeah, I slapped my butt and it woke up (just kidding!!)

I have to say I agree with John on this one. I don't re-read books. I may pick up one and not realize I've read it, but once I remember, I'll quit and grab something else.

John - I like to do re-read, guess my TBR pile will remain a mountain...sometime I felt like it gonna trip over...hehe.

Alix - Yep, and if you don't find the right one - then you won't enjoy the Bookclub. So glad someone finally like to do re-read ;)

Lisa - Once I pick up a book and realized I already read it, I continue reading it as if I never read it before.....hehe
